Apple Trees and Other "2-for-1 Plants"

Red apples are a delight to eye and tongue alike.

I love "2-for-1 plants." I'm not talking price here (although I'd welcome such a deal!). I'm talking about plants with multi-season interest. Take apple trees: they bloom nicely in spring and bear fruit in fall that is as attractive as it is tasty.

How to Dry Herbs

Thursday August 28, 2008
Have you included herbs in your landscaping this year? And if so, have they already produced seed? If the answers are yes and yes, you can still derive further use out of them if you learn how to dry herbs. Besides being attractive in landscaping, many herbs, once harvested and dried, can be used for culinary, medicinal or decorative purposes. Folding Garden Carts

Sunday August 24, 2008

Why would anyone want a folding garden cart, when they could have a sturdy metal wheelbarrow, instead? Well if storage space in the garage and/or storage shed isn't an issue for some people, maybe they wouldn't. But let's let them in on a little secret: the rest of us envy them -- they are in a distinct minority! And folding garden carts can help the rest of us gain some valuable elbow room.

Do you have a storage shed, for example, where a little of this and a lot of that are piled willy-nilly on top of each other? If the owners of such an overcrowded shed were to commission me to create a sign to hang over their shed door, I'd have it emblazoned with the words, "You Never Know." Why? Because when questioned about their clutter, such pack rats often retort that, oh well, you just never know when you're going to need this or that item.

But owning something is one thing, and finding it is another. If "you never know" when you'll be able to find what you need when you need it, then you have some serious storage issues. Eliminating some of your "space hogs" is one way to make some headway in solving the problem. Enter folding garden carts, which take up less space than metal wheelbarrows.

Tulip Trees

Saturday August 23, 2008
Although "tulip trees" are so called from the appearance of their flowers, it is their leaves that I find to be of greatest interest. Tulip trees (also nicknamed, "yellow poplars") offer a fall foliage that ranges from yellow to gold. But the unique leaf-shape is easily recognized throughout the growing season: the concavity at the tips of the leaves (or where one would expect a typical tip) suggests that someone came along and took a bite out of them!
