Apple Trees and Edible Landscaping
Wednesday October 1, 2003
It's finally here: apple season! If you've always bought only supermarket apples, perhaps this is the year you'll find out what you've been missing by trying the real McCoy -- or should I say, the real McIntosh?
Try buying apples from a local grower, if there are any in your area. And while biting into a crisp, juicy, freshly-picked apple, consider planting apple trees on your own property for "edible landscaping." Although dwarf varieties are available, most apple trees attain a height of around 20 feet and should be planted 35 feet apart, as Steve Jones tells us. Plant two different varieties for the necessary cross-pollination. Apple trees not only provide edible landscaping, but are also attractive in their own right. Read about some of the best varieties to grow in this Plant Man column.
