Landscape Design and House Color

Sunday May 8, 2005
Should the color of your house dictate your choice of plants in landscape design? That question has been posed recently in the Landscaping Forum, in a thread on landscape design and house color. It's a rather scary question. Why? Because we're often stuck with the color that our house happens to be -- for instance, if you have vinyl siding, which is the case with many houses nowadays. So if the question that I pose is answered in the affirmative, then our landscape design options are immediately narrowed. A sobering thought! Architectural style, too, often determines the landscape design around a house.

All of which you should consider when buying a house. That is, if landscaping and gardening mean a lot to you, don't just look at the land when buying a house. Make sure you know what landscape-design style you prefer, and pick a house to match! A landscape should complement the house it surrounds.
