Trying to find information on watering a lawn. Starting with new planting, killed, worked, power raked, raked again and drill seeded. Added irrigation system. When should I water and for how long?

I know you don’t want to hear “it depends,” but it’s true.

How often you should water depends on such factors as the grass type you have. Other factors include where you live, what kind of soil you have, how much sun your grass gets, and what time of year it is.

Then there are the intangibles like how much you’re willing to spend on your water bill (some people will gladly sacrifice a bit of green on their lawns to save a bit of green in their wallets). To be honest with you, I tend to err on the side of less watering. A good general rule of thumb is to focus more on watering deeply when you do water, rather than focusing on frequency of watering.

Because “where you live” is one of the biggest variables in the equation, the ideal people to ask this question of are the folks at your local county extension office. You can usually find them through the nearest university. Not only are they experts in this sort of thing, but they will also be much more in tune with what the local climate demands.
