Why Spittle Bugs "Spit" on Plants

Friday August 18, 2006
Like many children, as a kid I was drawn to the anomalies of the plant world -- not anything that required scientific training to identify, but just oddities that anyone walking around in the woods could stumble upon. Two good examples of such oddities can be found in a recent blog post, where I mentioned oak galls and wood burls. Marie Iannotti provides a third example, addressing a question that many children (and adults!) have asked: What's that "spit" on my plants? Spittle bugs are the culprits, and in this article, About's Gardening Guide tells us all about these uncouth creatures who leave their "spit" all over our plants.
