Topsfield Fair 2006

Monday September 18, 2006

picture of jackolantern As our outdoor decor theme transitions from summer to fall (and believe me, I do not say those words without feeling a touch of sadness), it's time to begin thinking about a mainstay of the fall home landscape and garden: pumpkin carving. Visit the 2006 Topsfield Fair to gain a new perspective on your pumpkin carving.

"The Topsfield Fair began in 1818, making it the oldest agricultural fair in the United States," writes About's Guide to Boston. Read his Topsfield Fair article to find out all about this fair held annually, north of Boston. In 2006 the fair will be held from September 30 through October 9. An events schedule can be found on the Topsfield Fair homepage.

The Topsfield Fair is perhaps best known for its giant pumpkin growing contests. The participants in the contest are always happy to share tips on growing giant pumpkins. In addition, multitudes of friendly arts and crafts enthusiasts flock to the Topsfield Fair, making it an excellent resource for tips on carving pumpkins. Examples of pumpkin art are displayed in the Fruit and Vegetable Building.

Also of interest to landscapers are the Wood Carving events. Monumental wooden figures carved with chain saws have been popular lawn ornaments for some time. Although not child's play by any means, learning how to carve with a chain saw is not beyond the abilities of the average person.

If you live a bit west of Massachusetts, perhaps the Boston area is too far a drive for you? Then consider attending the Big E. The Big E fair is held in western Massachusetts annually. For more information please see my article on The Big E.

I have been going to the Topsfield Fair for many years now and it never gets old. The midway is a little overpriced but if you avoid that then there are plenty of livestock and agricultural exhibits. The fair is set up at the fairgrounds in Topsfield and consists of dozens of buildings, each holding something different. Be sure to check in to the Fruits and Vegetables building to see New Englands Largest Pumpkin. Also check out the extensive display of bees at the Beekeeping Building. Rates are are very low. The best fair around!!!
