Shrubs: Landscaping for the Elderly?

Tuesday February 20, 2007

I am sometimes asked what I recommend for landscaping for the elderly rosa rugosa picture-- something that looks good, but that is less labor intensive than the typical landscape that "looks good." Of course, there's always container gardening. But in terms of installing plants in the ground and not having to fuss much with them thereafter, shrubs may be one of your better choices. As Marie Iannotti writes:

"They say that as the gardening population ages, we're looking for ways to make our gardens less labor intensive. A natural compromise that allows us to still have awe inspiring gardens, but with less fuss, is to incorporate more trees and shrubs; large plants that don't require constant watering, weeding and deadheading."

Through these pictures, About's Gardening Guide shares with you her Top 10 Shrubs for Home Gardeners.
