When Lawns Become Meadows: A Case Study

Sunday July 22, 2007
Michael Hillman relates an interesting story about how he and his wife stopped mowing their lawn -- I mean just plain stopped, cold turkey, and for good! "By the end of six weeks, the lawn had begun to take on a wild, disheveled look, the sort of look an abandoned house has," writes Michael. Just what the neighbors don't want to see, right: meadows springing up around the neighborhood, where well-manicured lawns used to be? This story presents an interesting case study of lawns becoming meadows, and it's a story with a happy ending. In looking at their pictures, though, I must say that the home in question appears to be located in a rural setting. It might be tougher to get away with this in suburbia!

I live up in Northern Ontario, Canada and I too have stopped mowning the lawn. To my total amazement have found wild flowers growing in my lawn. From daisies, mullen, orange hawkweed, rattlesnake weed and all sorts of jems. Retired and less work involved, I’m enjoying to view to no lengths.

Good for you! I can’t see myself mowing when I’m retired, either.
