Ipe Lumber: Too Good for Its Own Good?

Ipe lumber is a Brazilian hardwood known to be highly rot-resistant, making it ideal for decking. "Treated Southern yellow pine will last to about 10 years," notes Steve Nix; ipe lumber, by contrast, "will survive outdoor deterioration for 30 years." But here's the rub: "Environmentalists say that Brazil's leading wood export is being cut at rates that are decimating the rainforests of that country," writes About's Forestry Guide.
