For those who enjoy the outdoors, autumn is the time for hay rides, pumpkin carving and leaf peeping. Not to put a damper on the festivities, but...autumn is also the time to get the landscape ready for winter. Fall lawn care comes to mind, immediately; but there's much more to consider. Properly watering landscape plants during the autumn, for instance, will increase their chances of surviving the winter in good shape. Nor is it too early to start gathering the supplies you'll need, later, for protecting shrubs against wind damage.
