The Most Popular Christmas Trees
Thursday November 29, 2007
"What are the most popular Christmas trees?" It's a cold, statistical question that I can ponder at this point in my life, now that I know the difference between a red cedar and a white pine, between a blue spruce and a balsam fir. But the question wouldn't have occurred to me in my early childhood, when I experienced Christmas trees for the first time. Back then, Christmas trees were simply sacred objects, around which the magic of the holiday season revolved. Not the type of tree, but its symbolism was what mattered then -- even without knowing what the word, "symbolism," meant (or precisely because I did not know!). But there's no going back to that time of innocence. We move forward, as rational adults, taking some solace in the fact that knowledge can have a certain "magic" to it, too. And Steve Nix, About's Forestry Guide, offers information on the most popular Christmas trees for all you knowledge-seekers out there....
