Common Houseplants You Can't Kill

Friday January 25, 2008
Are there any common houseplants that you can't kill -- at least not without malice on your part? You bet there are, and About's Gardening Guide, Marie Iannotti features 6 of them in this article on common houseplants. Because they'll grow in indirect light, don't mind normal household temperatures and humidity levels, and "are perfect for someone who always forgets to water their plants," these 6 common houseplants are a brown thumb's delight!

I love this site. I have grown plants for 40 years and I found a lot of information I can use with my houseplants. Thank you.

I’m at my wits end! Recently, everything I’ve tried growing [from seed or not] or plants that I buy at the store, die. Why is this happening? Heard it say from my Mom [RIP] that plants would wilt or die, when the person trying to grow, handle or plant any plant, was sick. To the best of my knowledge I’m a healthy person, so I don’t know why this is all of the sudden happening. Even an aloe, which is the easiest to grow, died on me a couple of months ago, which I transferred it to another pot. It was doing great, then all of the sudden it died! Can anyone tell me why?!! TIA!

KT,

I’d say look for a common denominator (other than the fact that *you* have handled all these plants). For instance, have your water tested. Or if it’s specifically house plants that you’re having trouble with, consider whether or not the humidity in your home is sufficient.

I must admit that, at this time, my problem with houseplants is somewhat different from the kinds of problems people generally have with them (bugs, not enough humidity in the house, etc.). I live in a small house, with one south-facing window (in fact, the whole house is rather short on windows — in any direction!). So in my case, there’s a conflict between sun-loving houseplants and sun-loving humans! That is, if I give the plants the sun they need by placing them in that one south-facing window I have, I end up having less sun coming through into the house — because the plants block the sun….
