Growing Shiitakes on the Lower 40?

Thursday January 31, 2008

When you're vacationing at a destination that's new to you, finding a decent restaurant that doesn't charge an arm and a leg is a dicey proposition. Being unfamiliar with all the candidates, I admit to employing some rather unorthodox devices to make my selection of a restaurant. If their sign says, "Family," they're immediately disqualified: children's taste buds are not my idea of a discriminating palette. I always feel relieved to see "Gorgonzola" on the menu: the very word suggests a level of class beyond a meat-and-potatoes joint. It's also encouraging to see "shiitakes" spelled properly....

Which brings me to Steve Nix's interesting article on growing shiitakes. Don't laugh. If you have some woods on the lower 40, growing your own gourmet mushrooms just might be an option.
