Groundhog Day and Looking Ahead to the Spring Equinox

groundhog photoThe spring equinox is a prominent marker on that great circular route of the seasons that we travel annually. For plant-lovers, the spring equinox marks the end of winter and the promise that we will soon be planting the landscape once again. But the spring equinox is still several wintry weeks away. So why do I bring up the subject today, on Groundhog Day? Well, as I argue in this article, we are simply celebrating the spring equinox ahead of time, on February 2, when we celebrate Groundhog Day. Think of the latter as a holiday of transition: the "pre-spring equinox."
