Valentine Hearts: The Best We Can Do for Valentine's Day?

Wednesday February 13, 2008

Although we "celebrate" Valentine's Day, it is not a "holiday" in the sense that people get the day off from work. Something of a slap in old Cupid's face, wouldn't you say? Shouldn't we be honoring romantic love more highly than that?

But that's not the full extent of our slighting of Valentine's Day. I'm thinking in terms of outdoor Valentine's Day decorations -- or the lack thereof. The issue came up when we were discussing Thanksgiving decorations for outdoors: About the only celebration for which we do a worse job decorating is Groundhog Day! Are Valentine hearts on flags really the best we can do? Why is Cupid about as hard to find on a February lawn as a blooming lilac? Yes, I know that snow and frozen ground are impediments to outdoor Valentine's Day decorations. But if there were a market for it, I'm sure some entrepreneur would devise a bottom-heavy Cupid figure that could be set up on top of the snow.
