Climbing Hydrangeas -- Problem Solvers

Sunday March 30, 2008

Some people pride themselves on being problem solvers, but I want to speak here about plants that are problem solvers, specifically, climbing hydrangeas.

Let's face it: we can solve landscaping problems to our satisfaction only if we find adequate materials for the job (unless we "solve" them simply by lowering our expectations). In that sense, I like to think of certain plants, too, as being "problem solvers." While it may seem odd to call a plant a "problem solver," I use that designation to make the point that some plants present themselves as indispensable allies in our attempts to solve landscaping problems.

For instance, I'm often asked by frustrated homeowners, "Isn't there any hardy, perennial, flowering vine for shady areas?" Climbing hydrangeas are a wonderful solution for such problem areas, making them richly deserving of the accolade, "problem solver."
