Living Walls as Privacy Fences

I've seen some beautifully trimmed hedges recently in my travels, and they've inspired some reflections on the extent to which we lovers of shrubs and trees will go to incorporate our leafy or needle-bearing friends into a landscape design. When in need of privacy in a backyard, we don't build a fence, we plant one, instead! "Living walls" composed of shrubs and/or trees can be very effective privacy fences. And living-wall privacy fences don't have to take the form of traditional "hedges."

Nor does it stop with privacy fences. What lover of trees and shrubs would prefer an awning to a shade tree? And as for slopes, I'll take a ground cover of low-lying juniper shrubs any day over grass, to eliminate mowing!
