Toxic Tansy

Saturday November 15, 2008

What is tansy? A perennial flower? An herb? An invasive plant? Well, it's all three. Tansy is also poisonous, meaning it's something you want to be able to identify if you have children (in case some plants are growing in your yard or along a nearby roadside). If for no other reason, plant lovers will want to learn about this herb for its interesting history.

The fact is, tansy's reputation has suffered significantly in the process of traversing continents and centuries. In North America, it is now considered little more than a weed. Its toxicity has something to do with that; however, the low esteem in which North Americans now hold tansy probably has more to do with its invasive quality. But tansy hasn't been herba non grata in all ages and locales. Click the link to read my article and find out what the ancient Greeks, for instance, thought of tansy.
