Stone Fountains: Landscaping for the Senses

Stone fountains combine two elements that nicely complement the plants in a landscape: stone and water. In my tutorial on stone fountains I show you, with pictures, how easy it is to set up a stone fountain. The main challenge for some will lie in moving the stone around, because of its weight.

Touch a piece of stone and you immediately sense the feeling of permanence it could bring to a landscape. Incorporate that stone into the landscape as a focal point, and you've exploited its potential visually, as well. Flowing water, meanwhile, injects the element of sound -- which you don't get much of from plants, unless the wind is rustling their leaves. The gurgling sound from a fountain will soothe your frayed nerves when you pull into the driveway after a hard day at work.

You can complete this little "paradise for the senses" in your own backyard by growing fragrant flowers and including a few edible plants in your landscaping. To that end, Vanessa Richins, About's Guide to Trees and Shrubs, presents some ideas for growing fruits and nuts.
