Remington's Cordless Electric Mower Offers Hope

By , About.com GuideMay 4, 2009

Follow me on:

A battery-powered lawn mower that packs a punch and doesn't need constant recharging -- that's what we've all been hoping to find someday, right? Well, I won't say that Remington's cordless electric mower satisfies me completely on these points; but it does offer hope that the "lawn mower of the future" is not just a distant dream....

And for good measure, this cordless electric mower allows you to switch over to corded mode, in case you can't quite finish mowing a large lawn on battery power; instead of waiting for a recharge, you can just plug in and finish on the spot.

But once you experience the freedom of going cordless, you won't want to switch back to corded under any but the most dire of circumstances. And if you have a small or medium-sized lawn, the battery charge should hold just fine. In fact, in my test, this cordless electric mower held its charge for longer even than advertised.

I have one of these mowers. It worked great last year when I got it – I could generally mow both front and back yards on a single charge – tho I had some trouble with the front wheels staying on. This year tho, the battery doesn’t hold it’s charge long enough to mow even half of my lawn – and my lawn hasn’t gotten any bigger. I tried ordering a new battery, but the Remington site has an invalid security certificate so I won’t use it, their phone system just refers you to the website, and there’s no third-party supplier that I can find that has any in stock. I then found a note at tesstools.com that states that Desa (the parent company for Remington) has filed for Chapter 11. I think replacement parts won’t be available much longer.

Steve… thanks for your comment, I’ve had the B&Decker model for several yrs, works well but the batter gets weak after 3 yrs!

I also bought one of these last year. This year, it will no longer runn off of the battery. The 2 year warranty is useless, because the company declared bankruptcy and was sold. I can’t find replacement batteries.
Until Toro or Sears or some other major brand offers a cordless electric, I’d recommend avoiding them

I have this and is still using it today. My problem was the unit isn’t charging anymore. I might have to see if I can replace the fried components on its circuit board. Until then, I’m charging the individual batteries separately. For Steve and Kevin, I suggest ordering 5 Sealed Lead Acid batteries (12V 5Ah) from Ragebatteries.com or ZBattery.com which is about $12 to $15 each. I also advice not to discharge the battery too much. I have 3 battery units so I don’t run out of power and use each for half an hour only.

My mower will not work when I plug it into an electric outlet and swith the mower to electric only or electric boost. It still works on battery only but I need the extra power from having it plugged in. In light of the bankruptcy, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I COULD GET A SCHEMATIC OF THIS MOWER?

My comment and experience has been similar to Steve’s. I had to reinforce the front wheel structure with a make shift bracket in order to keep the front wheels on. The lawn I cut with this is pretty small, but the battery is not holding a charge well after 2 years. I am going back to a gasoline mower. Now the key fell out and I apparently ran over it with the mower because now all I have left are pieces of the key and no way to start it.
