Pros and Cons of Leaf Blowers

By , About.com Guide   October 6, 2009

Follow me on:

I admit to harboring a certain skepticism toward the use of leaf blowers. What gets them off on the wrong foot with me, right away, is the noise that leaf blowers emit. While bothering with the task of leaf removal, I take great consolation in being able to enjoy a peaceful autumn day, and the noise of an engine definitely detracts from that.

Even if you decide to use one, you need to recognize that there's a smart way to use a leaf blower, and then there's a stubborn way to use a leaf blower. The stubborn way is to wave the leaf blower around as if it were a magic wand, too disdainful of even minor manual labor to stoop to pick up a stray leaf or to use a leaf rake as a supplementary tool. Such stubbornness just lengthens the amount of time you'll spend out there working.

In this article, I argue, among other things, that the smart way to use leaf blowers is to use them selectively. Recognize that leaf blowers have their pros and cons, and don't throw out that leaf rake just yet: if you wish to perform the task of leaf removal as efficiently as possible, the "old-fashioned" leaf rake should still occupy a place in your arsenal.
