How Do You Save Money Landscaping?

Sunday October 25, 2009

One reason why I enjoy writing about the subject of landscaping is that it's not a one-size-fits-all proposition. There are all kinds of landscapes, from the humble to the opulent. To enjoy your landscaping, you don't have to spend a lot of money on it.

For example, if you live in a rural setting, you might save money on your landscaping by leaning heavily on the native plants that are already growing on your land. In urban or suburban areas, saving money on landscaping might mean maintaining your yard on your own (rather than hiring someone) and/or waiting to buy plants when they are on sale.

No matter where you live, you can save money on your landscaping by recycling waste creatively. For instance, instead of buying those dinky little bags of compost at the store, start a compost pile to make your own compost, filling it with kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, raked leaves, etc.

Do you have any tips to share? Click the link below and tell us how you save money on your landscaping.

I have hired a landsape designer, and it has SAVED me money! I used to spend on new plants, that wouldn’t work out for one reason for another. Hiring a certified landscape designer keeps me following a plan, for how we want our yard to look. Janet provided me with a plan, plant list and resources. This is much more economical that GETTING it WRONG! She knows what will work in my soil, light, zone etc etc!

We’ve saved by growing shrubs and perennials from cuttings, splitting, and sharing with neighbors. Also by relocating plants around the property that were in the wrong spots.
We’ve been using found/recycled items – old pallets made into a compost bin, chunks of the sidewalk we broke out laid into a patio, sticks used for staking, shredded leaves for mulch

If your landscaping your yard yourself, landscape additions like boulders and rocks can be expensive to buy from a garden center. A cheaper idea would be keep your eyes open as you travel around town and the countryside for any unused rocks or boulders that you can pick up and take home. Even with just one or two at a time it won’t be long before you’ve added some nice touches to your home landscape, for FREE!
