Blue Hydrangeas

Blue flowers are something of a Holy Grail for gardeners. But that's not the only reason why blue hydrangeas fascinate us. Blue morning glories are blue morning glories -- and that's all there is to it. Not so with blue hydrangeas. Some hydrangeas are capable of turning blue, but it takes some effort on our part.

What's the effort required on our part? Well, we have to ensure that the soil is sufficiently acidic. If we hold up our end of the bargain, macrophylla hydrangeas such as 'Nikko Blue' can turn out truly blue in color. Since the idiomatic description "true blue" has the connotation of "unwavering," it doesn't apply here: There's plenty of room for wavering! But it's well worth the effort on your part to help these beauties along, if you value blue flowers.
