Do you know what a "gourd show" is? Have you ever heard of a "hardshell gourd"? If you answered no to either of those questions, you may wish to attend this year's Ohio Gourd Show. The event is held annually during the last weekend of September. Festivities begin on that weekend's Saturday (9 AM to 5 PM). The Ohio Gourd Show ends the next day, Sunday (9 AM to 4 PM). For more information, please consult my article on the Ohio Gourd Show.
Anyone who enjoys Halloween crafts and fall yard decorations simply must grow (or purchase) hardshell gourds.
If you're unfamiliar with hardshell gourds, let me tell you right now: you will be amazed at what you can do on a hardshell gourd, artistically. They can be painted, but I recommend that people with artistic inclinations try their hand at carving them. Warning: you may get hooked once you start carving gourds!
The jack-o-lantern pictured at right may look like a pumpkin, but he's not: he's a dried hardshell gourd and will never rot!
