What plants achieve "most favored" status in your September yard? Forget fall foliage trees for now, as they will be hogging the spotlight next month.
I have quite a variety of top performers in my landscaping this month: a little of this and a little of that. Three ornamental grasses certainly deserve mention; then there's Liriope, which is often grouped with the grasses (although it's not one). An annual is doing its part to fill the floral-color void in late summer, along with a tropical plant; their time is limited, as Jack Frost beckons. A late-blooming shrub and a reblooming shrub, a classic autumn perennial, a rambunctious vine, an evergreen bush and a long-blooming summer perennial still going strong round out the list.
Here are the top performers in my September yard:
- Mums
- Gold Mops
- Red salvia
- Caryopteris
- Kerria (reblooming)
- 'David' Phlox
- Lantana
- Sweet autumn clematis
- Maiden grass
- Liriope
- Blue fescue
- Purple fountain grass
Now it's your turn. Vote in my poll for your favorites. Or if you can think of a deserving plant that I haven't listed, visit my Landscaping Forum and tell us about it.

Im just in the middle of building my tropical garden, so far I have some Bromeliads, Cyclamen and Veltheimia and think I will put some graases around the place.
Interestingly, a tropical plant is leading in my poll right now. With 634 votes cast, lantana has 31%; the next closest entry has only 11%.
