Is your new plant selection influenced by what you see when you travel? Mine is. Of course, you might expect as much from someone who writes about plants. But I'm sure many of you operate under a similar influence.
A travel destination I regularly mine for plant ideas is coastal Maine. Not all of these ideas pan out, mind you. The conditions in my landscape back home differ markedly from those along Maine's coast, even though the two are not separated by a heck of a lot of territory. One Maine-inspired idea that did not work out for me was growing blue poppies, which I've always admired when I visit the Thuja Gardens in the Bar Harbor area. Whenever I try these, they die an ignominious death.
Another favorite destination when I travel to the Bar Harbor area is the Asticou Azalea Garden. I was impressed with a yellow azalea there named Rhododendron 'Narcissiflora'. While I could not find that particular azalea for sale at a garden center, I did make up my mind to find some type of yellow azalea. What I ended up buying was a 'Golden Oriole' azalea shrub.
