Traditional types of garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) are highly susceptible to powdery mildew disease. But plant developers have addressed the issue with success over the years. The result is the group of new garden phlox cultivars that are relatively resistant to powdery mildew.
I grow several different breeds of garden phlox, including some of the new cultivars. One is Phlox paniculata 'David'. Another is Volcano Ruby Garden Phlox.
These newer, mildew-resistant garden phloxes maintain healthy looking foliage right through the summer. Like other plants in the species, Volcano Ruby garden phlox offers a long blooming period, from mid-summer to early fall. And its superior mildew resistance allows for its use in relatively hot climates -- perhaps its major selling point.
