Earth Day 2012 is right around the corner. Events will be taking place April 22, 2012. While the World Earth Day events constitute a sort of holy day for environmentalism, even die-hard greensters admit that the real focus should be on showing your "Earth Day spirit" 365 days per year.
As harmless as "Earth Day" might sound (what sane person doesn't love the earth, right?), the festival generates considerable debate. Indeed, this is as it should be. The first Earth Day, in 1970, was conceived by its founder, Senator Gaylord Nelson, as a medium for education. And broad-minded debate between opposing camps is a cornerstone of education (although you'd never know it in listening to many educators).
As Earth Day 2012 approaches, some of the harshest criticisms of the festival that you'll hear will come from the most passionate environmentalists. Many of them believe that Earth Day has become watered down, turning it into a feel-good experience when it should be a day of rage (over what hasn't yet been accomplished by the movement).
