Arbor Day 2012 lands on April 27. The fact is, we always celebrate Arbor Day on the last Friday of April. As the "tree holiday," skeptics scoff at the idea of celebrating Arbor Day (trees don't really need a day off from work, right?). But if you enjoy trees at all, it's not a bad day to meditate on their significance.
That's why I'm asking you to celebrate Arbor Day 2012 with me by answering the question, "What are the best trees you can plant in a yard?" I'm sure many of you have favorites among either the flowering trees (e.g., a cherry), the shade trees (e.g., maple) or the evergreen trees (e.g., a pine) -- or perhaps among all three of these groups.
Whichever types of trees you select as your favorites, please state the reason behind your selection, too, unless it's really obvious. For example, if you like a particular flowering tree because of the fact that its leaves are as gorgeous as its flowers, let us know. Likewise, we'd like to know if, say, the bark of a particular tree helps vault it ahead of other shade trees for you, or if you like the fact that you can use the cones of your favorite evergreen tree in craft projects.

My daughter is really looking forward to planting her tree on Arbor day. Thanks for this post.

Fast growing trees are important for younger children planting trees. You want the tree to be big enough to enjoy when they develop and are ready to appreciate what they did as a child.
