'Diablo' ninebark is a flowering shrub with reddish-purple foliage. 
The origin of the common name "ninebark" is rather convoluted. Various shades of brown are revealed as the bark peels, layer by layer. Supposedly you can see up to nine shades, in all, but I haven't been able to confirm this through my own observations. While the figure, nine may be arbitrary, what's definitely not arbitrary is the choice to grow Diablo ninebark in the landscape, for which there are compelling reasons, beginning with the leaf color (picture).
