Do you know what a "gourd show" is? Have you ever heard of a "hardshell gourd"? If you answered no to either of those questions, you may wish to attend the 2012 Ohio Gourd Show. The event is held annually during the last weekend of September. This year, festivities begin September 29 at 9 AM and end September 30 at 4 PM.
Anyone who enjoys Halloween crafts and fall yard decorations simply must grow (or purchase) hardshell gourds.
You can do so much with them. See the jack-o-lantern pictured on your right? That's not a pumpkin, but rather a hardshell gourd. As the name suggests, its shell (outer wall) is rather woody. Consequently, it will not rot the way pumpkins do.
There's added incentive for attending the Ohio Gourd Show in 2012: the extravaganza is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Any place these days to buy LIVE gourds? For the previous 30 years we have bought 400-500 gourds, made up beautiful baskets and delivered them to nursing homes and older folks for free. Now, we can’t even FIND live gourds to buy.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
I assume you mean the ornamental gourds, as opposed to the hard-shell type. This won’t help you much if you live in a different region from me (New England), but here it would almost be difficult *not* to come across live gourds this time of year. Even if one doesn’t stop at farm stands along the side of the road (almost all of which carry gourds in fall), many supermarkets and other stores carry them. But apparently, this isn’t true where you live.
