What plants are achieving "most favored" status in your September yard? Forget fall foliage trees for now, as they will be hogging the spotlight next month.
I have quite a variety of top performers in my landscaping this month (some won't be peaking till later in September): a little of this and a little of that. I've included two ornamental grasses on my list, as well as an annual and a tropical plant.
Here are some of the top performers in my September yard:
- Purple fountain grass
- Chinese lanterns
- Angel's trumpet
- Bluebeard
- Asters
- Sweet autumn clematis (invasive)
- Zebra grass
- Morning glory
- Crepe myrtle
Now it's your turn. Vote in my poll (below) for your favorites. Or if you can think of a deserving plant that I haven't listed, visit my Landscaping Forum and tell us about it.

I’m just in the middle of building my tropical garden. So far I have some Bromeliads, Cyclamen and Veltheimia, and think I will put some grasses around the place.
I bought Porcupine grass two years ago. The leaves are horizontally striped like porcupine quills. It covers a fence post and the gap between my composite fence connecting to the chain link fence. It is beautiful and makes me smile everytime I look at it.
Yes, Diana, porcupine grass is another great plant. It may be better than zebra grass in tight spots, since it’s not as floppy.
I’m new to landscaping/gardening and want a yard with minimal work but year round color. I liked the idea of contrasts with the fountain grass but I have light colored brick with beachy coral color in it. I just can’t see yellow in that picture!
However the Oak Leaf Hydrangea behind with Lobelia in front sounds great! Next year!
Dana,
I think you’ll be happy with the oakleaf hydrangea: it’s a plant that affords four-season interest.
