Pumpkin carving has come a long way. If what comes to mind when you hear "pumpkin carving" is cutting out three triangles (for eyes and nose) and a crescent moon lying on its back (for the mouth), then you need to visit a pumpkin festival this fall to see what creative carvers are doing nowadays. Or you could just view my pictures for some pumpkin carving ideas.
The emergence of the Dremel tool has certainly helped us become more creative with our pumpkin carving; you'll see some examples of "Dremel art" in my photo gallery. But artists are also driven to outdo each other, in the spirit of friendly competition -- competition being an outstanding engine for creativity. Most carvers who display a jack-o-lantern at a pumpkin festival want passersby to ooh and ah over their sculptures -- or laugh out loud, if the intent is to be absurd. With so many entries (tens of thousands at some of the festivals), it takes a lot of pumpkin pizazz to get noticed!
