Leaf Raking vs Leaf Blowing: Which Is Better?

A "procrastinator" is literally a person who puts something off till tomorrow, the heart of the term being cras, which is Latin for "tomorrow." I normally take a tolerant stance toward procrastinators; I, myself have been known to approach lawn mowing with anything but a carpe diem attitude. But leaf raking is another matter.picture of tulip tree leaf

For one thing, fall leaf raking isn't subject to the same objections as is mowing the lawn in summer -- and believe me, on any given summer day, I can come up with plenty of objections! But here are some of my favorites for getting out of mowing:

  • "It's too hot to work in the yard today."
  • "I don't feel like listening to the din of a mower motor."
  • "Mowing is too much like shaving: The grass just grows back anyhow, meaning I have to go through all this again -- soon."

There is a reason for mowing lawns that should motivate you to mow on time -- if you desire an immaculate lawn. But let's face it: Many are content to own just an average lawn. If you include yourself in that group, it's tough to get motivated to mow "on schedule," because procrastinating on mowing isn't going to kill your lawn. But the reason for raking leaves is more compelling: Failing to rake really can kill your grass!

When I say "raking," I really mean "leaf removal." I just happen to prefer raking as a method of leaf removal. I'm not a huge fan of leaf blowers. For one thing, leaf blowers are noisy. If I have to take the time to remove leaves from my lawn, then I at least want to be able to enjoy a peaceful autumn day, free of the drone given off by a motor. Leaf raking is work, yes, but I find it more amiable work than leaf blowing.

Which is better, in your opinion? Do you prefer to remove the leaves from your grass via leaf raking or leaf blowing -- or both? Click the link below to indicate your choice.

Between the two, I prefer raking for leaf removal. But I’m being drawn to leaf blowing if only because I’ve put in a rather large area of new garden with mulch. Getting fallen leaves out of the mulched garden is troublesome, but blowing them out would be effortless.
