I trust that Santa Claus brought you all some mighty fine gifts this year. But the question is, What did you do for the jolly old elf in return? Leaving out a cup of hot chocolate is getting old. I think Santa appreciates seeing a yard with some color in it when he pulls in annually with his reindeer.
As readers of my Landscaping site, I would hope that I've given you enough ideas over the years to accomplish that. I'm thinking mainly of the evergreen plants with which you can festoon the winter landscape. Here are the evergreens in my own landscaping that greeted Saint Nick as he cast a glance down from my chimney:
- Blue Princess holly
- Hetz Japanese holly
- Sky Pencil holly
- Arborvitae
- Hemlock
- Mountain laurel
- Gold Mops
- Yew
- Boxwood
- Leyland cypress
- Hinoki cypress
If Santa left his reindeer unattended for too long, I'm sure my arborvitae is a goner. But I doubt they would touch the boxwood, which is a deer-resistant shrub.
