In this Plant Man column, Steve Jones provides information about
trees for small spaces, because, as Steve puts it, "not everyone has a yard the size of Central Park." Read about redbuds (see picture at left), sourwoods, cherry trees and Persian lilacs.Photo ©2005 David Beaulieu (licensed to About.com)

there are Hawthorne Trees in my area of Oregon and I would very much like to start a tree from a branch available to me. I know and have started trees from limbs and branches of a willow by putting them in water. Or some you can dip in root start and plant to grow a new tree. Can that be done or is there a way to start a Hawthorne tree in a way like that?
Thank you for your assistance in this matter. Paula Morris
“Unfortunately, hawthorns are extremely difficult if not impossible from cuttings and so grafting is the only satisfactory method of increase,” says the Plants for a Future Web site. They go on to tell you how to graft them — sounds like a lot of work, though.
