But how you go about watering grass is also important: "To keep the lawn green requires about 1 inch of rain or irrigation per week," writes the Plant Man. A rep for the largest Canadian fertilizer company suggested that because I have a huge maple tree on my front lawn (facing east but exposed to the south)which sucks up water I lay down I may want to deviate from normal practice and water more frequently (daily perhaps)to ensure the grass (there are several feet of sand underneath)receives sufficint water.
What do you think?

Yeah, growing grass under trees is definitely a problem, due in part to the difficulty you mention. More water may be the solution. But you may also end up deciding, at some point, that it’s just easier to mulch under the tree.
