The Organic Lawn Care Challenge
Monday August 6, 2007
Those of you currently engaged in a life-or-death struggle with crabgrass should find this article on organic lawn care both amusing and informative. The salient point to take away from the article, I think, is that there are no shortcuts if you are committed both to organic lawn care and having a great-looking lawn. "No shortcuts" translates into "a heckuva lot of work." So if you don't have that kind of time on your hands, something's got to give. Ah, decisions, decisions....

Ahh yes, the temptation of better living thru chemistry. It really comes down to what your priorities are and what you can afford or are willing to pay and also what results to expect from either chemicals or natural paths.
Good point. But remember the other variable in this equation, too: the well-manicured lawn. I’d like people to reflect not only on the chemicals vs. “natural paths” debate, but also on whether or not they deem the well-manicured lawn (translation: a lawn with no weeds) a necessity in landscaping.
While reading the article in question, I couldn’t help but think to myself, “If staying organic is your top priority, and if you aren’t willing to devote tons of time to lawn care, then you’d better consider:
A. replacing lawn areas with planting beds
B. learning to tolerate crabgrass.
