Tree Sculptures

Thursday March 13, 2008

Perhaps, like me, you've admired the wooden sculptures sometimes seen for sale along roadsides. Chainsaw artists fashion these sculptures out of logs, in the same way that ice sculptures are made from blocks of ice. Bears are a common subject for these wooden sculptures, but I've also seen eagles, totem poles and many other designs.

Axel Erlandson's tree sculptures, however, were something altogether different. Erlandson (1884-1964) created his tree sculptures out of trees that were still living and growing! Steve Nix gives us a look at these magnificent tree sculptures in his photo gallery.
