I marvel at the fanciful pronunciations of plant names I sometimes indulged in before becoming a more diligent student of botany. I used to pronounce "cotoneaster," for instance, as if it were composed of the words "cotton" and "Easter," although the shrub has nothing to do with either one! Rock cotoneaster is a horizontally-spreading shrub with small leaves. In fall, the foliage of cotoneaster plants competes for attention with their striking red berries. Because they stay relatively low to the ground, cotoneaster plants are often used as a ground cover. But there's more than that to the popularity of these interesting plants....
