The Eastern States Exposition

What It's Like to be at the Eastern States Exposition

By David Beaulieu, About.com

Skip's Outdoor Accents exhibits gazebos, sheds, arbors, chimineas, ornamental bridges, decorative wells, garden statuary and other landscaping items for outdoor home improvement at the Eastern States Exposition. The garden accent pieces at Skip's are nicely complemented by the neighboring display at the Eastern States Exposition, set up by Picture Perfect Ponds. The latter installs water gardens, and also sells "pond kits" for do-it-yourself landscapers.

For those looking to crown their gazebo or garden toolshed with a weathervane garden accent, or with a cupola proudly bearing a striking finial, at Colonial Collections you'll find an impressive array of accent pieces. The Fairfield and Stamford, Connecticut (USA) merchant also sells such items as decorative mailboxes, sundials, windchimes, decorative garden torches and signs. Purveyors of hand-crafted sign art for gardens and doors include The Sign Doctor (603-542-8968) of Claremont, New Hampshire (USA) and the owner of Slates & Such (413-739-3023), a local residing in West Springfield, home of the Eastern States Exposition.

But the Eastern States Exposition is hardly just a local event. Mister Boardwalk, based in Point Pleasant, New Jersey (USA), makes the trip north to display its unique products. The company name derives from its chief product, namely, roll-out wooden walkways. These walkways are perfectly suited to act as temporary "bridges" over muddy areas during the wet season. But they can also serve as decorative and/or functional elements at other times of the year. The company even touts them as being "great over snow and ice." One of their primary selling points is that they are so easy to install.

Nor is the Eastern States Exposition an East Coast secret. Fair-goers can be seen swinging to their hearts' content in the demo rope hammocks supplied by Golden Hammocks, of Waite Park, Minnesota (USA), carriers of a diverse line of reclining options for enjoying the garden or landscape.

But landscaping is about more than just surveying your work from the comfort of a hammock. First you have to get your work done! And the final two merchants noted here sell products designed to help you get that work done -- efficiently. Salsco's Landscaping Division specializes in power equipment built for the "Landscape Industry and the Landscape Professional." Products include leaf shredders and wood chippers, as well as brush cutters and leaf blowers.

Meanwhile, pruning shears are the focus of the display at the Eastern States Exposition booth of Florian Tools. Florian supplies the garden pruners and the test branches at their booth, and lets passers-by supply the muscle to cut through those branches. That is, the minuscule amount of muscle needed to do so! For I have tested several of their ratchet pruners and can attest to the ease with which they cut through a branch.
