Definition: Chilling requirements are requirements for fruit trees, nut trees, bulb plants, shrubs and other plants, measured in terms of the total hours needed during a dormant or winter period in which the temperature is below 45ºF and above 32ºF. Meeting the chilling requirements will result in normal growth and bloom in the succeeding growing season. Also see "vernalization."
