How Are Hybrid Plants Different From Other Plants?

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Hybrid plants are plants that are produced as the result of the pistil of one species being impregnated with the pollen of another. But we must distinguish between two different ways that this process occurs:

  1. There are natural hybrid plants
  2. But then there are also artificial hybrid plants

The latter are the result of human intervention. A gardening enthusiast, for example, may wish to see what the result would look like of a cross between two related specimens. But the phenomenon can also occur in the wild, without the aid of humans.

Also Known As: hybridized plants
