Definition: Latticework is an open framework made of strips of metal, wood, or similar material overlapped or overlaid in a regular, usually crisscross pattern (occasionally latticework has a checkerboard pattern). Latticework is often seen as a component of porches, decks and gazeboes. Traditionally, trellises were made of latticework. Latticework also sometimes assumes a more prominent role on the landscape, functioning as a privacy screen, often enhanced by having vines grow on it.
Also Known As: lattice, fretwork
Alternate Spellings: lattice work
Common Misspellings: latice, lattise
Examples:
I installed latticework up against the garage to provide my favorite vine with a place to climb.
