"Cambium"

Definition: A tree's cambium is the layer of cells lying between the wood and bark of a stem from which new bark and wood cells originate. When you have limbing work done on a specimen tree, ask the tree service that you are hiring how they intend to climb the tree. Their answer to this question could make all the difference in whether or not they get the job, since climbing trees with spikes damages the cambium.
