Chilling Requirements

By David Beaulieu, About.com

Definition: Chilling requirements are requirements for fruit trees, nut trees, bulb plants, shrubs and other plants, measured in terms of the total hours needed during a dormant or winter period in which the temperature is below 45ºF and above 32ºF. Meeting the chilling requirements will result in normal growth and bloom in the succeeding growing season.
