Green Manure Crops

By David Beaulieu, About.com

Definition: Green manure crops are cover crops that are planted when a garden is otherwise in a state of dormancy and that are not grown for their own sake but rather to be ploughed or tilled under before the regular growing season. Like compost, green manure crops serve as a soil amendment. An overview of green manure crops is provided by Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas.
