Deer-Proof Plants

"Deer-proof" plants is a term used for the plants least-preferred by Bambi ("resistant" and "tolerant" are adjectives also used). Planting them is a wise choice in deer country. But note that deer will eat just about any vegetation when hungry, so do not use this strategy as a crutch. Fencing and repellents are also considered here.

Deer Resistant Plants
Don't think of "deer-proof" plants in absolute terms, since they are not a rock-solid guarantee against Bambi's depredations; a hungry Bambi will disdain few foods. But by growing such deer-resistant plants as those on this list, you at least play with the odds on your side.

Deer-Proof Perennials
Bambi finds these deer-tolerant perennials less tasty than others. Again, growing such plants should not be regarded as a fail-safe strategy; do not be lulled into a false sense of security by planting deer-tolerant perennials. The idea here is simply to put the odds a bit more in your favor.

Deer-Proof Bulbs
Plant deer-resistant bulbs if you live in a region where marauding deer threaten to eat up your landscape. While there are no guarantees when it comes to deer and plants, growing these deer resistant bulbs at least give you a fighting chance. There are some obvious advantages to growing plants that deer usually don't eat.

Deer Resistant Ornamental Grasses
Need a plant that is lovely, drought-tolerant and deer-resistant? Ornamental grasses afford you some options that cover all these bases. And your options cut across various sizes (heights), to boot.

What Types of Deer Fencing Are Available?
By now you've probably browsed my material on deer-proof plants. But what if you wish to grow plants that Bambi is known to eat frequently? Fencing is a better choice for you. It's more expensive and something extra that's "in the way" while you're working in and enjoying your yard, but for some, it will make the most sense.

Deer-Proof Ground Covers
Landscapers often grow ground covers as a solution for a problem area. But what happens when deer garden pests wipe out your ground cover? So much for a "solution"! This article discusses ground covers that are relatively deer-proof, in addition to boasting many other good attributes.

Deer-Proof Shrubs
Bambi will eat just about any plant when he's starving (Wouldn't you?). But the deer-resistant shrubs discussed in this article are not his favorite foods. Consult this list when you shop at the garden center this year and lessen the chances of having Bambi decimate your landscape.

Deer-Proof Plants for Rock Gardening
Rock garden plants should be drought-tolerant. If you live in deer country, they should also be deer-tolerant. A nice intersection of these two prerequisites is often found in cacti and succulents. For example, Bambi tends not to eat prickly pear cactus and hens-and-chicks.

Deer Garden Pests
Don't have time to read through the articles above? Here's a collection of my pieces on deer-tolerant plants, assembled for easy accessibility. Acquaint yourself with the diversity of plants deer tend not to eat. Don't fight Bambi: take the path of least resistance and grow what he does not crave!

Deer-Proof Plants - Natural Way to Prevent Lyme Disease
Dealing with deer damage in the garden is one thing; dealing with Lyme disease (carried by deer ticks) is another. The one is something you can just decide to "get over," while you can only hope you get over the other, should you be unfortunate enough to come down with it. That's why deer control is not a subject to be taken lightly.
