In zone 5, lilacs close out the spring season and usher in the summer. Complement your lilacs by growing other shrubs that bloom earlier in spring. Deadhead lilacs after they have bloomed.
What I love most about lilacs is the sweet aroma of their flowers. If there's one aroma I associate with May even more than the smell of newly-mown grass, it's the fragrance of lilacs.
