Snyder also mentions the Missouri dogwoods in Route 66 Traveler's Guide, although it's a reference to their spring beauty:
"In spring, when the dogwood is in flower, St. Peter is said to lock Heaven's gates so that Ozark souls do not return to a place of greater beauty."
